Description

Paul Caponigro is internationally recognized as one of the most important landscape photographers in the history of the medium. His first one-man show opened at the George Eastman House in 1958 and his reputation for uncompromising skill with the large-format camera was established. His work has sometimes been linked to Alfred Steiglitz and Minor White, who also used straight photography to reveal inner emotions and spiritual insights. But Caponigro’s lasting contribution to photography is not limited to the rare and classical beauty of his compositions, or masterful darkroom craftsmanship, but more importantly his unparalleled ability to draw forth “the landscape behind the landscape” and engage the viewer in the mystical presence concealed in nature. Masterworks from Forty Years presents the first chronological overview of Caponigro’s photographic career in a single, beautifully bound monograph. Each photograph has been reproduced to facsimile quality for this fine edition. Readers familiar with Caponigro’s previous editions, The Wise Silence, Sunflower and Megaliths, will be delighted with this extended examination of Caponigro’s artistic contribution, which includes many images never before published, as well as his most renowned achievements. David Stroud contributes an essay that examines Caponigro’s artistic development, from his earliest years of instruction and apprenticeship, through the images that established his place in photography to the succeeding bodies of work that comprise his mature achievement. This first edition published in 1993 by Photography West Graphics, Inc. includes 61 Laser Fultone Reproductions made from original Gelatin Silver photographs. Printed under artist’s supervision by Gardner Lithograph in Buena Park, California, in an edition of 5,000 copies and bound by Roswell Bookbinding in Phoenix, Arizona. Each edition is autographed by Paul Caponigro. Edited and designed by Carol Williams in Carmel, California Production and layout by Jerry Takigawa Design in Pacific Grove, California ISBN: 0-9616515-5-5
