When it comes to fine art photography, the term “vintage” has a very specific meaning. It means, an original work handmade by the artist within 1 year (max. 5 years) of the negative date. The term “early” is often used to describe works where the exact date of creation is unknown or difficult to determine, but the tonal range and brighteners in the photographic paper are consistent with works made within 10 years of the negative date. Vintage originals are in high demand by collectors due to their rarity and historical importance as the first works ever made from a negative.
