Michael Dweck

Biography

Michael Dweck (American, b. 1957) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was given his first Kodak camera by his parents at age seven. Dweck’s projects incorporate mediums ranging from photography, painting and sculpture to film and sound. After attending the Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, Dweck began a career in advertising. As creative director of international campaigns in various media, Dweck received over forty awards for his work including the Gold Lion at the Cannes Film Festival. Two of his long-form television pieces were acquired for the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His “Mermaid” series of photographs featured at Photography West focuses on the liberated, modern Piscean woman. When Dweck scouted out the Weeki Wachee Spring, home of the famous mermaid shows, as a location for this project, he met a local woman who had been raised in Aripeka, an island fishing village on the coast nearby, and began photographing her. Through her, Dweck was introduced to other island locals, some of whom could hold their breath underwater for as long as five or six minutes. He photographed them alone, together, and at play, but mostly at night in the depths of the Weeki Wachee River. Dweck also photographed in Montauk, Amagansett, and Miami. According to gallery director, Julia Brett Christopher, "Dweck has the unique ability to see and photograph women in our natural state without any inhibitions: light, lively, carefree and confident." By abstracting the female form in a painterly swirl of light and watery refractions, his images celebrate the spiritual transformation that is achieved by the shedding of clothes and psychic baggage in the meditative isolation of the underwater world.

Dweck’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide, and are part of international art collections, including the archive of the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art in New York/AICP, where two of his long-form television pieces reside. His directorial debut, the feature documentary, The Last Race, premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. In 2019, he was a Sundance Institute Catalyst Forum fellow, and Sundance Music and Sound Design Lab fellow. His second feature documentary, The Truffle Hunters, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition, and then went on to be selected for over 45 international festivals, including Cannes, Telluride, New York, Zurich, Toronto, and San Sebastian. The film won the Directors Guild of America award and The American Society of Cinematographers awards for Best Documentary, was shortlisted for the 2021 Oscars and BAFTAs, and was nominated for many more prestigious industry awards. His third feature film, GAUCHO GAUCHO, premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Documentary Competition.
