Biography

Mary Ann Bushweller was born in Port Jervis, New York. Her interest in black and white photography was inspired in her youth, during an exploration of old family albums full of beautifully processed gelatin silver photographs. When the opportunity arose, she enrolled in photography classes at a local community college. As her interest grew, she took additional classes at the University of Massachusetts in Boston from 1992-1993, School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1993 and the Massachusetts College of Arts in 1995. In the following two decades, she pursued studies at the New England School of Photography (1997-2001) and thereafter began an accumulation of awards by participating in numerous juried exhibitions of her fine art photography. Working with a Mamiya 645 medium format camera, Bushweller develops her own film and makes each gelatin silver photograph by hand in her home darkroom.

My aim is to transcend the ordinary by means of the ordinary. Striving to reach this goal photographically, I use easily found subject matter, natural light and a minimum of equipment and chemicals. My style comprises simplicity of composition, the elimination of extraneous detail and an intimate perspective. I try to design and capture moments of an enhanced stillness representing an opposing force to the freneticism of contemporary life.
