Bob Kolbrener

Biography

“A beautifully executed black-and-white photograph represents much more than simply seeing the world without color.”

Bob Kolbrener was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He first experienced the photography of Ansel Adams on a trip to California in 1968 and has been exploring the landscapes of the American West ever since. He joined the Ansel Adams Workshop as an instructor in 1973, alongside Wynn Bullock, Imogen Cunningham and Yousuf Karsh.

Kolbrener’s commitment to having a prepared mind, and Edwards Weston’s concept of “significant presentation,” allows Kolbrener to react quickly to changing light and weather events in places of swirling character, such as the Big Sur Coast and Yosemite. He works with black and white film, two medium 6×6 format cameras and a large 8×10 format camera, without the use of computers or digital technology. “Bob may well be one of the last great masters of photography’s traditional era,“ said Brian Taylor, former Director of the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel.

In 1996, Kolbrener relocated to Carmel Highlands where he continues to photograph the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur landscape, develops his own film and makes gelatin silver photographs by hand in his home studio darkroom.
