Ansel Adams
Condition Issue: “Foxing”

possibly foxing condition report

According to the condition report, this was an example of “possibly” foxing. There is no possibility, the entire back is covered in mold aka “foxing,” which can travel across and damage the photograph. While foxing can be treated, it can take months, thousands of dollars, and could compromise the integrity of the original artwork.

Documented Damage: Foxing

Photograph of the back of the Ansel Adams with “possible” foxing taken by our gallery director in New York, which was forwarded to our client. Unedited video and photographic documentation of potential acquisitions are provided prior to bidding.

Damage: “Holes”

Please note that some language such as “pinpoint sized impressions” can be difficult to decipher, which is why our gallery director physically inspects each work and allows the video/visual documentation to speak for itself.

Restoration

moonrise with faded stamp

Beautiful original that had significant foxing damage which had been removed, but the restoration process almost completely destroyed the artist’s stamp on the back of the mount thereby jeopardizing the integrity of the original artwork.
