Archival Framing

When Carol Williams opened the doors to Photography West Gallery in 1980, Ansel Adams was one of the 500 individuals in attendance. He was the only attendee, however, who returned the next day to educate her about framing photographs! He congratulated her for framing the entire exhibition in acrylic, rather than glass, and explained that acrylic always required cleaning with a soft cloth and anti-static spray. He asserted “Carol, the number one cause of damage to my photography is improper framing.” He continued to clarify that broken glass had been the primary cause of damage to his own photographs over the decades.

When glass breaks, it shatters and the shards scratch the surface emulsion, which is irreparable. Secondly, he informed her to never frame a photograph in wood. Always use metal, because there is acid in wood and the acid can travel across an acid-free board (unlikely, but possible). Last but not least, never use cardboard backing, or store photographs (or any work on paper for that matter) in cardboard. Cardboard is highly acidic, and the acid will seep into the matboard, turning it yellow and eventually destroying the photograph.

Another type of damage caused by improper framing is a result of overmats being glued or adhered to an artist’s matboard. Unless the artist cuts the overmat themselves, no overmat should ever be glued or permanently attached to a signed matboard. When signed, the artist’s matboard is considered part of the original artwork. Doing anything to compromise the integrity of the artist’s board therefore compromises the integrity of the entire piece.

All photographs framed by Photography West are framed in metal mouldings with Optium acrylic and foamcore backing. Overmats are secured to the backing board, not the artist’s original mounts. The only photographs that are framed in hardwood mouldings are photographs measuring 40” x 50” or larger.
